Stripping stucco from a Bronx walk-up means breaking cement off the brick it is bonded to. The hollow sections come away easily. The sections still holding are where the brick gets damaged, and how they are handled decides what the wall can be afterwards.
On a frame house, stucco comes away with the lath it was fixed to. A pre-war Bronx wall has no lath. The parge sits directly on the brick, and removing it means breaking it off a surface it is still gripping. That makes the removal itself one of the most consequential parts of the whole job rather than a simple demolition stage before the real work.

The hollow sections come off first and show how the parge was applied and how the brick looks underneath it. On a Bronx wall that first look sets how carefully the rest needs to be handled.
Light tools where the grip is weak, slower and more controlled methods where it is strong. The point is to keep the brick face intact across the bonded sections rather than to finish the strip as fast as possible.
Once the wall is bare the owner sees what the brick actually looks like. If it is sound and clean, leaving it exposed is still on the table. If it is not, the replacement coating goes on and the reason is plain.
Most owners think of stripping as the unskilled part of a stucco replacement, the demolition before the craft begins. On a pre-war Bronx wall it is the opposite. The strip decides whether the brick underneath is still an option, and a crew working to a speed target will close that option without anybody noticing until the wall is bare. Ask how the bonded sections will be taken off, not just how long the strip will take. The answer tells you whether the finish decision is still yours.

It depends far more on the bond than on the size of the wall. A mostly hollow elevation strips quickly. One where the parge is still gripping across large areas takes much longer, because those sections have to be removed slowly to protect the brick behind them.
