Traditional stucco in Manhattan, also called hard coat stucco. It is the only stucco system with enough thickness to run a shaped profile, which is why the band courses, surrounds and quoins on pre-war Manhattan buildings are three coat work and nothing else.
Walk any pre-war block on the Upper West Side and the shaped detail you are looking at is mostly stucco. A band course between the second and third floors, a molded surround around a window, quoins picked out at the corner. None of that was bought and stuck on. It was run in place with a template drawn through wet material, which is a plasterer’s technique rather than a coating one.
As a traditional stucco contractor in Manhattan that is most of what we are asked to do here. The reason it has to be three coat is simple. A profile is cut into thickness, and only a full build gives you thickness to cut into. Thinner systems can imitate the look with a foam shape underneath, and on a building where the original was run in cement that difference shows.
Four things follow from shaping cement rather than coating a flat wall.
Three coat builds to roughly seven eighths of an inch, and the shape is formed in that material. A thinner system has nothing to cut into, which is why running detail is a traditional stucco job by definition.
On a Manhattan repair the profile already exists somewhere on the elevation. We take it from a sound section rather than approximating it, so the new run matches what is already there rather than what a catalog offers.
Band courses, sills and projecting details all catch water and hold it. That is why they fail before the flat wall around them does, and why the detailing on top of a profile matters more than the profile itself.
Fill a damaged section of a run profile with flat material and the line breaks. On a Manhattan elevation where the same band course runs the full width of the building, that break is visible from the street for as long as the wall stands.
A section of the existing Manhattan run is cleaned back and the shape is transferred to a board. Where the original has weathered unevenly we take it from the soundest length available rather than averaging several.
The board is cut to the reverse of the profile and mounted, then a straight rule is fixed to the wall to guide it. Getting that rule level over a long elevation is most of the skill, because any deviation is repeated along the whole run.
The shape is built up and drawn through more than once as the material stiffens. Trying to form a full profile in a single pass produces slump and a soft edge, which is the difference between a molding that reads crisp from the sidewalk and one that does not.
It is the most common thing we are called to undo on a Manhattan elevation. A section of band course or surround gets damaged, and the repair fills it flat because filling flat is fast. From directly below it can look acceptable. From across the street the line stops and restarts, and once the eye finds it, it does not stop finding it. Running the profile again costs more and takes a template and a day. It is also the only version that disappears when it is finished.

A board cut to the reverse of the profile you want, mounted on a stock and drawn along a fixed rule through wet material. Each pass takes the shape closer to finished. It is a plasterer’s tool rather than a coating one, and it is how a band course gets its line.
Because the eye reads the line, not the surface. A run molding carries a continuous shadow along its whole length, and a flat fill breaks that shadow. From below the patch can look fine. From any distance the interruption in the line is the first thing you see.
Usually, provided a sound length of the original survives somewhere on the building. We take the profile off that section directly rather than working from a drawing or a standard shape. Where nothing usable is left, the honest answer is that we are interpreting rather than matching.
In cement, yes. A single coat at around three eighths of an inch has no depth to shape. Synthetic systems get around it by cutting foam and coating over it, which works but is a different construction and reads differently up close on an older Manhattan elevation.
