Stucco patching covers small, shallow damage on a wall that is otherwise sound. Some of it is genuinely a job you can do yourself with a premixed patching material, and we will tell you when that is the case rather than quoting for it.
Patching is the smallest of the stucco jobs. Chips, dents, a hole where a fixing came out, a shallow area knocked off by something. What defines it is not the size of the damage but the condition of the wall around it. If that wall is solid and bonded, the damaged part can be filled and finished. If it is not, this is not patching at all.
As a stucco patching contractor in NYC we get calls that turn out to be one of three things. A genuine patch, which is often small enough that we will tell you to do it yourself. A larger failure that somebody has been calling a patch. Or a crack, which patching compound does not fix and which is a different job entirely.
Most people searching this are planning to do it themselves, and on small damage that is a reasonable plan. A premixed patching material handles a lot of it.
These five decide whether it is one of those jobs or not.
A chip, a dent, a fixing hole. If the damage is a few inches across and has not gone through to whatever is behind it, that is a patch.
Tap the area and a hand’s width around it. A hollow note means the surrounding stucco has let go and filling the middle of it achieves nothing.
Above head height on a New York building the access costs more than the material. That is the point where a small job stops being small.
A patch on a rear elevation nobody sees can be functional. On a street facade the finish and the color have to be right, which is a different level of work.
One patch is a patch. Six on the same elevation is a wall telling you something, and treating them individually usually costs more than dealing with the wall.
Four things worth knowing before filling anything.
Compound pressed into a crack sits in a gap that opens and closes with the building. It falls out or the crack reappears through it. A cracked NYC wall needs a different treatment, not a fuller one.
New material and thirty year old material weather at different rates. A patch that matches perfectly on the day will diverge slowly, which is why the useful question is how it will look in five years rather than at handover.
The eye finds edges rather than surfaces, so a small patch has less edge to be found. Enlarging a patch to make it “neat” makes it more visible rather than less.
A patch stronger than what surrounds it does not fail. The wall next to it does, at the join. That is why compound gets chosen against the existing material rather than for strength.
The damaged area is rarely the question. Whether the stucco surrounding it is still bonded decides whether this is a patch or the start of something larger, and that takes a minute to establish.
One area on a New York elevation is a patch. Several is a pattern, and a pattern has a cause worth finding before anybody fills anything.
If it is small, reachable and on a wall nobody studies, we will tell you it is small enough to handle yourself and what to look for in a patching material. That costs us a job and it is the right answer often enough to be worth saying on the page.
There is a point on every elevation where individual patches stop making sense, and it arrives earlier than people expect. Each one carries its own setup, its own finishing and its own edge that will age separately from the wall. Somewhere around the fourth or fifth on the same face, the cost of doing them individually passes the cost of recoating, and the result of recoating looks considerably better. If you are counting patches rather than describing one, that is the conversation to have rather than asking for a price per hole.

Cut the damaged area back to sound material, dampen it, fill in layers rather than one pass, and finish to match the surrounding texture before it sets. The part most people get wrong is the last one, because texture has to be worked while the material is still wet.
On small, shallow damage within reach, yes. A premixed patching material handles chips, dents and fixing holes perfectly well. What you cannot fix that way is anything where the surrounding NYC wall sounds hollow, anything above head height, or a crack.
Clean the edges back to material that is bonded, then build up in layers rather than filling the void in one go. A deep hole filled in a single pass shrinks as it cures and leaves a dished patch. Two or three thinner applications hold their shape.

Fewer than most people expect, usually around four or five on the same elevation. Past that the individual setups and edges cost more than recoating and look worse than it. Several patches in one area also suggest a cause that filling them will not address.
